Detective Helen Grus, who was a part of the SACA (Sexual Assault Child Abuse) unit, uncovered alarming reports from mothers regarding the sudden deaths of their newborns, with autopsies indicating potentially troubling conditions.

Following her inquiries into additional autopsy reports, she faced suspension without pay and in March of 2025, she was found guilty of Discreditable Conduct under the Police Services Act (PSA).

The decision is chilling, stating: “Police officers are not allowed to investigate without permission from their executive when looking into…criminal liability of public officials. Now that to me, as a lawyer, as someone who has worked in the rule of law around the world is terrifying. That means the government [is] above the law, and that the police are being directed by the government instead of being operationally independent to ensure that we have rule of law in Canada.” – Bath-Shéba van den Berg, Counsel for Det. Helen Grus
