Will the Federal Government honor Constable Pierzchala or will his death be in vain?

Front line members of every Police Service in Canada have long been aware of the need for bail reform. In this case where the offender has a long and related record, however, was still granted bail, shows just how much the system is broken.

The Federal Government continues with what can only be deemed as a soft approach on crime towards repeat offenders.  Without getting into the firearms debate one can see that court ordered prohibitions do not nor will they ever work on habitual criminals.  More laws are not the answer but an impartial Court without government interference that applies the law is.

Recent Canadian history is fraught with examples of the Courts letting repeat offenders out only to commit more offences while on release. You don’t have to search very hard to find examples of both Judicial and Parole Board releases going horribly wrong.

Randal McKenzie, one of the accused in the death of Constable Pierzchala has a long history of violent offences and time in jail, yet for some reason the Court felt they could trust him to abide by the conditions to stay home and not possess a firearm.  What would possess a Judge to think that a person with such a history would abide by any rule?  When will the Courts consider the safety of Canadian citizens first?  Are the Courts encouraging high rates of recidivism?  As a parent who raised children, one only has to think back to how many times you warned your child before action was required.  Simply put, it’s not much different.  Consider the Court as the parent and the offender as the child.

Many of the members of Police on Guard are serving or retired Police Officers.  Other members have strong ties to the protection of Canadian people through the military or enforcement agencies.  We have all witnessed the leniency of the Courts and abuses by those who appear before them.  It is time for this to end.

Police on Guard supports the National Association of Police Chiefs in their endeavor in getting bail reform and calls upon the Federal Government to ensure that Constable Pierzchala’s death will not be in vain.
