Federal Employees Still Working From Home

It is a surprise how many don’t realize that the vast majority of our federal civil servants in Canada are still working from home. Covid has been ‘over’ for months, yet the federal government has taken steps to permanently adopt a very appealing and customizable ‘hybrid’ option for employees. This new permanent hybrid plan will see many employees return to the office, but only for the mandated two days per week, of their choosing, with many exceptions being approved.

Unless you work or live with someone in the federal service, you wouldn’t know the lengths the government has gone to accommodate employees in their own homes. Most have received a complete office, ergonomically selected for each individual, with all necessary electronics to work as efficiently from the comfort of their homes and in their pj’s, if they choose.

So, what of the accountability? How can you ensure you’re getting an equal amount of work done, or that the same work ethic is applied? How can these individuals still call in sick? These employees no longer even have to live in the same province (or country?) as their employer, now having the freedom to relocate anywhere while working from home at the taxpayers’ expense.

The original concern, of course, was the transmissibility of Covid, the need for social distancing and to keep systems working while we waited for the cure-all ‘vaccine’. And it didn’t stop there. They were also told that they had to be vaccinated, despite being isolated at home, masked for online meetings so as not to single out those who had to.

Major changes also occurred in the buildings, even though they were ghost towns…plexiglass barriers, copious sanitizing stations, offices and common areas reconfigured, heating and cooling systems running off season to accommodate new air flow standards and recklessly increase operational costs, all in preparation for the apparent return of staff.

All these solutions have now been completely debunked as ineffective and exacerbating. If these mandates had been effective, why was there a need to send them home in the first place? And why are they still being stubbornly maintained?

The government sought to set an example for other businesses and instead continues to employ virtue signalling of failed mandates, at all costs to the taxpayers, unwilling to admit that they were wrong. To this day, those required to be onsite continuing to be forced to mask and social distance, and test for covid with the slightest sniffle, giving them access to unchallenged paid leave as often as ‘required’.

Think of the money that has been, and continues to be, spent. Your tax dollars. Think of the security risks to your private information as it is being managed from someone’s home office. Think of trying to recover all the assets shipped to each home, and the cost of doing so. Is it any wonder the staff are not willing to return full time? This will not be easily undone.

And what of the vast properties our government operates. Buildings that bustled with 200-300 people now seeming busy when just 50 staff arrive onsite. There is a push to select properties worth maintaining (inspections and reports are currently being done on each site). Those worth the cost have openly invited other agencies to share their space with renovations planned to support them. The problem being that these agencies are also running on < 20% occupancy. Those properties not worth the effort will be sold off, completely removing all workers from contributing to that local economy.

Now think of the communities that service the tens of thousands of federal workers that used to be there smiling 5 days a week, and now resent having to come to the office at all. The small shops that knew each of us by name. Those who’s survival depends on our thriving community. Remember, federal employment tends to be centered in capital cities and key military institutions. These are the communities that will be targeted for collapse without the daily existence of federal service workers.

The impacts of this new ‘hybrid’ plan are far reaching, well beyond the individuals themselves. But thanks to their refusal to actually ‘follow the science’ and their unabated, nefarious, and reckless spending on the part of our government, our economy has already been broken on a federal scale. Their policies are suffocating our communities and destroying private businesses as well and we cannot allow this to happen.

It would once again appear that all of their talk, and apparent steps towards ‘returning to normal’, that it was never actually part of their plan.
