Thank you Russell Silverson for joining in support of Police on Guard for Thee.
I am a retired Police Officer and ex-military who served for 25 Years in the Royal Ulster Constabulary and 8 years in the army. I served both in uniform and as a detective in Northern Ireland. Terrorism was the main threat to our society and many of my fellow officers died in the course of their duty. I also did two tours with the United Nations mission in Kosovo carrying out the role of Policing and as a Police Trainer helping to set up and train the new Kosovo Police service. I survived car bomb and motor bomb attacks during Police and military service. I am fully aware of the extent of how emergency powers should be used and also how they can be abused. I studied among other things, the European Convention on Human Rights and the alignment of these rights within policing. I am a Canadian by birth and returned to Canada to reside here last summer. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms contains these same rights as found in the convention and is fundamental in shaping personal freedoms in a democratic society. It is imperative that all those who understand the Canadian Charter and its principals as the overarching law of Canada. I hope I play a small part here in Canada to maintain the rule of law through peaceful means, the law being applied to everyone individually responsible in government and in all its branches and to be vigilant against its arbitrary abuses.
