Further Information Regarding the Cancellation of our Family Day Picnic in Ottawa

We wish to clarify some issues regarding the cancellation of the Police on Guard family picnic in Ottawa.

After our initial application for the necessary permit, and despite subsequent amendments in an effort to comply with stipulations set out by the city, we were notified late on June 30th that our permit had been declined leaving no opportunity to relocate or acquire a new permit.

Additionally, other incidents raised concerns for potential disturbances and, as a result, we erred on the side of caution and cancelled the event. This event had been planned as a family event focused on the children first and foremost.

We attended the site to ensure that the cancellation was clearly communicated, where we spoke to officers who confirmed that the event could not go forward without the permit. Regardless, they also made it clear that they would not prevent people from freely enjoying this public park.

Aware that our decision to cancel this event could face criticism, we have noticed comments on social media questioning the legitimacy of our initial statement. For additional information regarding our permit process, you can contact Carlos Ramos, the Program Manager for Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services with the City of Ottawa.

Police on Guard has always advocated for the adherence to the rule of law and followed the process as set out by the city to obtain a lawful permit. Acting counter to municipal laws would be contrary to our mission. We will always comply with lawful direction.

Police on Guard remains committed to being an active participant in our communities and will take additional measures to ensure we are able to fulfill our duty to be a positive influence within our society with all future events.
