Ontario Town Councillor Suspended Without Pay for Participation in Trucker Convoy

Harold Jonker is a West Lincoln Councillor and the owner/operator of Jonker Trucking.
Mr. Jonker attended the Ottawa trucker convoy and as a result the
West Lincoln Council launched an integrity commission to investigate his actions.
On July 12 the commission’s report was published and, according to the findings, Jonker broke two sections of the council code of conduct: “his duty of loyalty to residents” and another code concerning “the acceptance of gifts of benefits” as a councillor.
Mr. Jonker contested the findings stating that “As a representative I choose to represent the residents who are being negatively affected by the lockdowns and mandates.” and that any ‘gifts’ accepted were in the form of already prepared food.
The result was that Mr. Jonker donate to West Lincoln Community Care and on top of that he also had his Council membership remuneration suspended for 30 days.
The backlash for those supporting the convoy has been widespread from employees being fired, to insults and inappropriate labels being used by our own Prime Minister to Councillors being unjustly reprimanded for attending on behalf of the people they represent.
Regardless of where your opinions lay with the trucker convoy, Canadians should be outraged at this absolute abuse of power and disregard for the very freedoms that Canada was founded on.
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is not a document for our government and those in power positions to pick and choose what suits them best. It’s a document that gives every Canadian the rights and freedoms that this great country was founded upon!!
