Police on Guard for Thee: Man arrested for lockdown rules on Saturday, dead on Monday

After watching the events that transpired in a Scarborough parking lot on January 4th 2021 some important questions need to be asked.
Legality and constitutionality, while our primary focus, can no longer be the only way to assess our current situation. We now have to ask ourselves what is ethical and moral.
It is becoming abundantly clear that there is no end in sight. Time and time again we are seeing officers and the public being put in these situations.
Forget whether the public was breaking the law. Forget whether the police’s application of the law was constitutional. None of that matters when a life is lost.
To be clear, we do not yet have the full account of what transpired, and we are not second guessing the police officers that were forced to respond to this complaint.
The important question is what do we want our country to look like, now and in the future? Should gathering in a public space require state intervention?
A curfew has just been announced in Quebec. What provinces are next? What will the public’s reaction be? How will these measures be enforced? Recent events leave little to be optimistic about.
We are just police officers. We are asking for a better approach. To our elected officials, our courts, our respective services and associations – What are you waiting for?
Fellow officers, we ask that in these situations you #RememberYourOath and if you agree we need clarification and answers on the orders we are being asked to enforce, join in support of our cause.
