Viral immunologist speaks out against ‘abusive’ child

We recently shared our thoughts on Peel Health instructing parents to isolate their children who have come in contact with a classmate who tested positive for Covid-19, for 14 days. Since then, Brampton’s mayor addressed these harmful guidelines, saying “Public Health must ensure the best interests of children and families are at the centre of recommendations. They must be based on science with evidence for all to see. I am relieved to hear from Dr. (Lawrence) Loh that this mistake is being fixed and this flyer is being removed from circulation.”
Although we’re grateful to see these guidelines being addressed on a small scale, the same instructions still seem to be in circulation throughout other regions. Byram Bridle, an associate professor of viral immunology at the University of Guelph received instruction from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health to isolate his child for 14 days after a student in his class tested positive for Covid-19. He calls these policies “nothing short of abusive.”
We encourage you to read the article on Toronto Sun’s website and while you do, think critically about how these instructions may affect young children and their families.
