Marco Mendicino, Former Safety Minister Faces Censor After Lying About Invocation of Emergencies Act During Freedom Convoy

Continuing the trend Canadians have come to expect under a government rife with misconduct, we find ourselves with yet another scandal to review.

It is Trudeau’s former public safety minister, Marco Mendicino, that is in the hot seat for lies resulting in the invocation of the Emergencies Act on the 14th of February 2022.

When Trudeau’s government was debating how to ‘deal with’ the Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa, the discussion of the Emergencies Act (EA) was tabled. The EA is a tool that provides law enforcement with sweeping powers that can supersede Charter Rights and Freedoms in the event of a national emergency, provided the justification is thorough and sound.

Fully aware of this, Marco Mendicino falsely reported that police authorities recommended moving forward with the EA, indicating the tools it would provide were necessary for them to successfully address the protest.

Soon after, we were introduced to the Special Joint Committee, created with the sole purpose of confirming whether the government’s justification for invoking the EA was sound. Mendicino repeated his lies under oath to the investigating committee and, to no one’s surprise, the committee put forward a report that found no fault in their justification.

Despite their findings, a recent (unrelated) Federal Court decision further confirmed what we already knew – that the invocation of the EA against the Freedom Convoy was unjustified and completely unconstitutional.

The former minister now stands accused of misleading MPs (and all Canadians). He is facing censure as formal punishment for lying under oath and for his role in stripping the rights of law-abiding citizens.

Censure, for those unfamiliar, can be defined as ‘a stern rebuke from legislature’. This is the sum of his penalty…a public finger-wagging and a slap on the wrist.

This brings another scandal full circle. Our government continues to lie, cheat and gaslight Canadians for their own benefit. When caught, they fabricate lies or censor evidence, and when that doesn’t work, they simply assign their own trusted people to ‘investigate’, ensuring that no misdeeds can be substantiated. Then finally, a public apology; thick with political doublespeak designed to appease the masses while accomplishing nothing by way of discipline. Rinse and repeat.

This year brings us an election, and a chance to correct the wrongs of the past. Will we finally see a government in Canada with honesty and integrity, one willing to hold itself to account when necessary? Canadians deserve nothing less.
