It’s been two months since the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act to quell peaceful protest in the nation’s capital. The framework of the legislation requires the government to launch an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the declared emergency within 60 days:
Inquiry
63 (1) The Governor in Council shall, within sixty days after the expiration or revocation of a declaration of emergency, cause an inquiry to be held into the circumstances that led to the declaration being issued and the measures taken for dealing with the emergency.
Report to Parliament
(2) A report of an inquiry held pursuant to this section shall be laid before each House of Parliament within three hundred and sixty days after the expiration or revocation of the declaration of emergency.
At such time as the findings of the committee are published, Police on Guard will provide further information. The use of the act, and the resulting infringements on Canadians guaranteed fundamental rights has been subject to widespread criticism. The public deserves transparency, accountability, and answers from the federal government.
